The One That Got Away
Well, that's not quite right; this one turned up well after I'd bought my car, so it was a moot point.
But I'm not the only one who spends endless hours searching the classifieds for a better example than the one he just bought...right?
Truth be told, I had a number of pretty straight-faced daydreams about buying this car and selling mine, even though I'd have ended up losing like $5,000 on the deal when all was said and done, putting the effective purchase price of the replacement Benz near $20,000.
And that's assuming I could have sold the old one for something close to the $13,200 I paid. No sure thing.
Still, 20 grand for a '98 SL500 with 38,000 miles? Suppose it was really as advertised: "mechanically perfect," "no damages or cosmetic issues," "vehicle is perfect"—all according to the owner of a Benz/BMW garage.
Which would you rather: this Benz or a base Fiat 500c?
Hm! I smell a future comparison test.
