Grandpa Special

One of the many wonderful things about the R129 SL500 is that there's still a bunch of nice low-mileage specimens out there, i.e., it's not so old that a 40,000-mile car is a once-a-month find.

I don't know about you, but I can't think of a better way to spend $17,500.

I don't even mind the chrome wheels since they're the 18-inch AMGs. The 500 Benz was basically the official transportation of drug dealers, rappers, and Jose Canseco, so chrome 18s seem entirely appropriate.

Seriously, what else would you drop $17,500 on if you wanted a convertible? You might—might—find an unmolested Honda S2000 with comparable miles for that price, though I'm guessing it'd cost more.

Or maybe (are you listening, porschegirl?) a nicely kept Boxster. Look, here's one at a discount with the same mileage as the Benz, 85 fewer horsepower, and 1,000 fewer pounds of cold German steel:

But what else? Am I forgetting something?

Is there really a better $17,500 car in the world right now than this 500 Benz?

@mercedesmark,

Manual shifter! Oh man. Ordinarily we do not endorse 350 Benzes here at 500Benz.com, but that looks pretty great.

I might take this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/160940972450

Something like that doesn't come around very often, however.
